Hi There.

Welcome to my blog documenting my temporary stay in Sheboygan, Wisconsin. Please keep in mind that the target audience for this blog is my family and close friends. So, if you're wondering why I post pictures of food I have eaten or silly videos of me singing while driving, that's why.

Homemade Wine, Raspberry Custard Pie and Other Wonderful Things

I was invited to dinner at Delphin’s house tonight, along with several other new friends. Delphin is a wonderful cook and even makes his own wine! I sampled his yellow currant and Guayaba (no idea what kind of fruit this is) wines. I enjoyed them very much, even though I’m not much of a wine person. They were delicious and very sweet.

Delphin made sweet and sour pork, which was very good. He also served squash from his garden, nicely seasoned. For dessert, we had his famous raspberry custard pie. Yum!

Above: Delphin is a fellow plant enthusiast. He is growing fruits and vegetables for his garden, including the cantaloupe starts shown above. (Interestingly, he said that wine made from cantaloupes tastes a lot like licorice.)

After dinner, he showed us some pictures from a recent trip he took to Ecuador, where his son and daughter-in-law live and do volunteer work.

A simple but thoroughly enjoyable evening.

  1. I love this post. The pictures are really nice, and Delphin seems like a very interesting guy. What a hospitable congregation! I think Joseph would like him a lot, with the homemade wine and canning and all....

  2. Guayaba = guava. It is very common and appreciated in Colombia... have you heard of guava paste, it is a sweet made of the fruit that can be found sometimes in latin groceries http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Guava I am amazed you can get those in Sheboygan.

  4. Antonio: I have heard of Guava, although I don't think I've ever tried it. I'll keep a look out for guava paste (there's a Mexican grocery store on my street... maybe they have it).

Delphin's son is living in Ecuador - maybe that's his connection. (I'm not sure if Columbia and Ecuador share similar fruits...)

  5. Neva: I agree, Joseph would probably really like him. Delphin is a widower and I think he's in his late 70's. Being around him was quite refreshing - he learned to cook in the last few years and often invites people over. (He didn't learn how to cook until after his wife died.) He and I have a common love of plants and photography. If he was a few years younger.... ;)
