Here in Wisconsin, they pronounce Oregon as OregON. Like “Turn the light ON.”
I was talking to someone about this and was telling him how we say it.
His reply: “It’s not spelled ‘Oregen’. There’s an ‘o’! It’s Oregon.”
He does have a point about the spelling. But, I claim geographic familiarity. :)
Born and sort of raised in OregEN, thank-you very much. :) Miss you.
ReplyDeleteWell, I have an uncle who says Orry-gone and Balty-more and 'Nee-VAH-duh". Sam says Orry hasn't gone anywhere. How does your friend pronounce 'knife' or 'nine' or 'potato' or 'tomato'? Richard P says New Joisy but I really come from New Jersey. I am emailing you a song about state names.

Unca Sam sez is Jenna going to the Wisconsin Dells? If you do, get a waterproof cover for your flip!
ReplyDeleteNeva: ah ha! I knew I was right. :)
ReplyDeleteAund Duddie: I'll have to test out a few more words. I do know that they say soda here instead of pop. I've been randomly polling people: "How do you say the state below Washington?" They probably think I'm crazy.
Haven't made plans to go to the Dells. Good reminder though. Kind of forgot about my flip.
I say soda and Sam says pop. It depends on which side of the Rockies you live on. We don't drink either any longer.

Had a friend in Washington that pronounced it OregON. I warned her as she started to move there that she better learn to say it correctly. Well, she moved, she was corrected by the locals, moved back to Washington, and was cured!
ReplyDeleteNatasha: Thanks for adding your opinion on this. I agree with you. :) I'm just going to have to start correcting people here in Wisconsin!
